Maspalomas is all about the beach and relaxing. The town is on the south coast of Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands. This in turn forms part of Las Palmas in Spain. Gran Canaria is the second most populous island of the Canary Islands and the third most populous in Spain. Only Tenerife and Majorca have more residents. The island can be found in the Atlantic Ocean and is about 93 miles from the northwestern coast of Africa. The island is mostly made of fissure vents, a sign of its volcanic origin. The hotels Maspalomas offers are well positioned to enable the visitor access to the island and its attractions.

Gran Canaria has a variety of microclimates and landscapes and has been called a "miniature continent" for this very reason. The landscapes vary from beaches and dunes of white sand to green ravines, picturesque villages and volcanic outcrops. UNESCO has a third of the island under its protection.

More than two million people come to visit the island annually and most of them stay in the southern part of the island where the hotels Maspalomas has listed are found. The reason for this is that the south is sunnier and has less rain than the northern parts. The hotels are a few feet away from Maspalomas Beach and the guest will be able to visit the beaches as often as they wish or delight in the views of the ocean and the mountains from the private balconies of the hotel room.

When not enjoying the many beaches the island has to offer, guests can visit Palmitos Park, a large 49-acre bird park and botanical garden on the island. Pack a picnic basket and enjoy the countryside setting in the mountains. Walk along the paths and be in time for the show in the amphitheater, which features birds of prey. More than 160 types of cacti and succulents and 42 different palm species can be viewed in the park, as well as an orchid house. Parrot-like birds, hummingbirds, swans and ducks and 230 different species of exotic birds can be seen. Many are free flying and the park's most famous resident, Crazy Delores, an eccentric parrot, is one of them. Apart from the birds, the park is also home to monkeys, crocodiles, fish and a large butterfly house.

Another of the island's attractions and something that is not to be missed is the Dunes of Maspalomas. They are situated between Playa del Inglés ("the Englishman's beach") and the town of Maspalomas. The Red Canaria de Espacios Naturales Protegidos (Canary Islands Network for Naturally Protected Areas) protects 146 sites, 33 of which can be found in Gran Canaria and one of which is the Dunes of Maspalomas. The Network has six nature reserves, two natural parks, ten natural monuments, seven protected landscapes and four sites of scientific interest under its protection. The visitor to the island will not be bored with this variety.

Other attractions include the lighthouse and the Aero Club in Tarajalillo, from where tourists can charter flights and fly over the island for an aerial view of the beaches and mountains.

As for facilities at the hotels Maspalomas offers guests free access to their spas, gyms, hydro massage saltwater pools, saunas and Turkish baths. Some also feature free tai chi and aqua-gym classes. Beauty salons and barbers have their standard treatments available. Two golf courses, The Meloneras Golf Course and Salobre Golf Course, are only a short drive from some of the hotels and have a good reputation with locals and visitors. Golf buggies can be rented from selected hotels Maspalomas provides and seafront paths are steps away from some establishments.

For the convenience of the visitor, the hotels Maspalomas offers have luggage storage space available and offer their reading clientele access to a library. Bicycle rental will enable the visitor the opportunity to explore the island by road and path. Laundry and ironing services are available and the guest can rest assured that their laundry has been well taken care of. Selected hotels have guest rooms with kitchens that are well equipped with a hob and an oven; others have restaurants for an evening out.

Only a 40-minute drive to Gran Canaria Airport, the town of Maspalomas and the hotels Maspalomas supplies are ideally placed to offer the visitor easy access to the attractions and beauty of the island.
